Robert Pattinson Just Proved Navy and Black Belong Together

The actor stepped out in a (mostly) monochrome outfit.

one of the most exciting trends in fashion right now is the lack of rules. Instead of hard-and-fast, black-and-white dictums that declare what is stylish, good style is truly up to the wearer (and however they might choose their outfits). In many cases, this has rendered the fashion faux pas nearly extinct. Socks with sandals, mixed patterns, black and navy together—it’s all fair game.

Specifically, the old-school idea that black and navy don’t pair well together is a modern day myth. Rob Pattinson proved just that when he stepped out in London. Black and navy don’t just look OK together; they actually complement each other, too. Wearing them side by side creates an outfit that feels monochromatic, but still has some added depth from the varying colors. Monochrome outfits are an easy way to create an outfit that feels streamlined, but shifting some of the colors (but keeping the shade similarly dark) gives it a refreshed feel. Plus, it’s just not as a harsh as an all-black look.

Aside from the two colors, Pattinson also varied the weight and feel of each layer. He wore a plain black tee under an open blue button-front shirt, under a leather jacket. Not only does this give the outfit texture, but it’s also just practical. Cool fall mornings, followed by hot afternoons and cool nights are hard to dress for; an outfit of layers is a good way to tackle the challenge. He finished it off with straight-leg trousers, futuristic black sneakers, and retro sunglasses. Simple, but put-together—the ideal go-to for fall.
