‘Step up to the plate’ Meghan Markle told to look after father as she plans Harry wedding

MEGHAN Markle has been told she needs to “step up to the plate” and help her bankrupt father by her half-sister Samantha in a scathing attack on the future royal as she plans her wedding to Prince Harry.

Meghan’s father Thomas Markle declared bankrupt in 2016 and her half-sister has lashed out the former Suits actress for not making her father’s welfare “a priority”.

Samantha, one of two children Mr Markle had before he met Meghan’s mother Doria, claims the future royal “owes” her father for helping her launch her successful acting career.

Meghan’s half-sister Samantha said: “I think he did help her a lot and he is very creative too and encouraging, so she made the most of her environment.

“I don’t think he feels that she owes him, but that is how I see it.”

And in an apparent swipe to Meghan’s attire in the royal couple’s official engagement photos, the 53-year-old: “If you can afford $75,000 (£53,535) for a dress, you can afford $75,000 to help your dad. That’s how I feel, what’s who I am.

“Honestly – what she could spend in a weekend would greatly help dad, so that should be a priority. I think you need to step up to the plate and make sure he is well taken care of.”

The estranged half-sister also hit out at claims that Mr Markle may not deliver the father of the bride speech, with reports suggesting he would be replaced by Meghan.

Samantha said: “Of course my father wants to speak at the wedding and he will. He is proud and looks forward to it.

“A father speaking at a wedding is not patriarchy, it is poetic justice.

“A proud and loving father should not be denied of the joy of speaking at his daughter’s wedding.

“And we can’t forget that it was our father who uplifted us and made us all that we are today so he should not be deprived of the right that fathers have to give a proud speech at the wedding.

“He wants to speak and it’s his right as a father.”

Mr Markle, a former Hollywood lighting director is expected to walk Meghan, 36, down the aisle when she marries Prince Harry, 32, in a ceremony t George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on May 19.

And Meghan’s half-sister also hit out at her charity work.

Prince Harry’s fiancee has previously dedicated to her time to humanitarian work in Rwanda, where Meghan supported a clean water campaign, and a push in India for better education conditions for girls.

Samantha said: “I’ve seen in my lifetime a lot of situations where celebrities visit a place which is poverty stricken and they’re wearing impeccable clothing, they themselves are wealthy.

“And it really feels like just a photo opportunity, so that is a little exploitative in my mind.”

Meghan’s half brother Tom Markle Jr last year revealed that Meghan’s acting career was once given a boost after her father won the lottery.

Speaking last year, before the engagement was announced, he said: ”If Meg marries Harry she’ll have won the lottery of life but dad winning the lottery helped us all.”

Her half-brother detailed how Thomas Snr – who reportedly won around £565,000 ($750,000) when Meghan was nine-years-old – was able to finance the determined young star’s path to Hollywood.

Tom Markle Jr said: “That money allowed Meg to go to the best schools and get the best training. Meg is someone who has always had laser focus.

“From the start she was the apple of my dad’s eye, his princess.”

It was through her father’s work in Hollywood that Meghan became inspired to pursue a career in acting.

Meg grew up watching Hollywood work. There was never any doubt in her mind what she wanted to be.”

A Kensington Palace spokeswoman when contacted by the Express.co.uk said they would not comment on Samantha’s remarks
