Meghan Markle baptized and confirmed in secret ceremony

Royal bride-to-be Meghan Markle has been baptized into the Church of England in a secret ceremony at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace.

The intimate 45-minute service was conducted by the archbishop of Canterbury on Tuesday evening.

According to the Daily Mail, Meghan had Prince Harry by her side as she was baptized using holy water from the River Jordan.

The baptism formally brings the divorced American actress into the Anglican faith and is an important step ahead of her wedding in two months’ time.

The couple were allegedly joined by Prince Charles and the duchess of Cornwall for the private ceremony.

However, the queen and Prince William were absent from the proceedings.

Plans surrounding the baptism were kept a closely guarded secret, with only a few royal aides involved.

The 36-year-old actress’ baptism was immediately followed by her confirmation ceremony, allowing her to join Prince Harry for Holy Communion.

The full ceremony was conducted by Justin Welby.

The 62-year-old archbishop struck up a close friendship with the future royal bride as he helps her prepare for her wedding.

The silverware used for royal christenings was brought for the service by Crown Jeweller Mark Appleby.

Reports suggest the items used were a silver font, basin and a flask of holy oil.

Meghan’s entry into the faith has been seen as a subtle nod to her future grandmother-in-law, the queen, who is the supreme governor of the Church of England.

Prince Harry’s bride was brought up as a Protestant, like her mother, Doria Ragland.

Her dad, Thomas, is a member of the Episcopal Church of the United States and is an Episcopalian, which is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

Prince Harry is set to marry his American fiancée on May 19 at St. George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Kensington Palace has declined to comment.
